How to Make a Bed Like a Hotel
How to Make a Bed Like a Hotel
Hotel beds feel different because of three techniques: hospital corners, a tight top sheet fold-back, and layered bedding pulled drum-tight. The whole process takes 3 minutes.
Fitted Sheet Foundation
Pull over all four corners. Lift each mattress corner and tuck excess fabric underneath, pulling taut. Zero wrinkles on the sleeping surface. If it keeps popping off, sheet suspenders (8 dollars for a set of 4) criss-cross under the mattress and hold permanently.
Hospital Corners on the Top Sheet
Lay the top sheet flat, right side down, wide hem at the headboard. At the foot, tuck the bottom edge under the mattress. Move to one side. Lift the hanging sheet about 18 inches from the foot and fold it up onto the mattress at a 45-degree angle. Tuck the hanging fabric below under the mattress. Drop the fold down and tuck it. Repeat on the other side. This creates tight diagonal folds that hold the sheet in place all night.
The Sheet Fold-Back
Pull the duvet to the headboard, then fold it back about 18 inches to expose the top sheet wide hem. This creates the signature layered look: pillow, a band of visible top sheet, then duvet. Tuck the duvet at the foot for a finished look.
Pillow Stacking
Back row leans upright against the headboard. Front row lies flat. The karate chop: place your hand sideways across each pillow center and press down to create a styled crease.
Sheet Selection
Hotels use percale cotton in 200 to 300 thread count. Above 400, multi-ply yarns inflate numbers without improving feel. White percale from Target or Costco (30 to 50 dollars) matches hotel quality. White forces frequent washing, resulting in genuinely cleaner bedding.
The Hospital Corner Technique
Hospital corners are what give hotel beds their crisp, tucked-in look. Here is the exact method:
Step 1: Tuck the flat sheet under the mattress at the foot of the bed.
Step 2: At each corner, lift the edge of the sheet about 12 inches from the corner of the mattress. This creates a diagonal fold hanging down the side.
Step 3: Tuck the hanging fabric under the mattress.
Step 4: Drop the lifted portion down the side and tuck it under the mattress, creating a clean 45-degree fold at the corner.
Repeat on all four corners. The result is a tight, smooth surface with no bunching or wrinkling.
Pillow Arrangement
Hotels typically stack pillows in layers. Place sleeping pillows flat against the headboard. Place decorative or accent pillows in front at a slight angle. Two sleeping pillows per person is standard for hotels. For the fluffed, inviting look, karate-chop the top center of each pillow to create a dent, which gives pillows that plush, freshly arranged appearance.
The Layering Order
Hotels use a specific layering sequence that creates the signature puffy, inviting look. From bottom to top: fitted sheet pulled tight with no wrinkles, flat sheet smooth-side-down (so when folded back it shows the smooth side), blanket or coverlet, duvet or comforter, then a decorative fold of the flat sheet over the top edge of the duvet. The fold-back of the sheet creates the clean white band you see at the top of hotel beds. A mattress topper or mattress pad under the fitted sheet adds the plush, cloud-like feel that makes hotel beds feel different from home beds.
