How to Make Your Dishwasher Clean Better

Dishes coming out dirty is usually a maintenance or loading issue, not the machine.

Clean the Filter

Most post-2010 dishwashers have a removable bottom filter. Twist counterclockwise, pull out. Scrub under running water with toothbrush and dish soap. Clean every 2-4 weeks. Dramatic improvement if never cleaned before.

Clean Spray Arms

Remove (twist or clip off). Clear clogged holes with a toothpick. Soak in vinegar 30 minutes. Reinstall.

Monthly Cleaning Cycle

Cup of white vinegar in a bowl on top rack. Hottest empty cycle. Follow with baking soda sprinkled on bottom, short hot cycle.

Loading Mistakes

Overcrowding blocks water spray. Leave space between items.

Wrong direction: bowls and cups face center and downward.

Blocking the dispenser: large items prevent detergent door from opening.

Over-rinsing: sensors need food residue to calibrate cycle strength.

Right Products

Pods and tablets outperform liquid consistently. Rinse aid is essential: fill the dispenser. Prevents spots, helps drying.

Hard Water

White mineral deposits: monthly vinegar cycle or Affresh cleaner. Severe cases: whole-house water softener.

Why Your Dishwasher Leaves Residue

If dishes come out cloudy, spotted, or with food particles still stuck on, the problem is almost never the dishwasher itself. It is how you load it, what detergent you use, and how often you clean the machine.

Loading for Maximum Cleaning

Face everything toward the center spray arm. The water jets spray from the center bottom and sometimes the center top. Plates, bowls, and pans should angle toward the spray source so water hits the dirty surface directly.

Do not nest items. Two bowls stacked together block water from reaching the inner surfaces of both. Alternate large and small items and leave space between everything.

Place large items on the sides and back. Large cutting boards, baking sheets, and pots on the bottom rack should go along the edges so they do not block the spray arm from reaching the upper rack.

Glasses and cups upside down and angled. Place them at an angle rather than perfectly inverted so water drains off rather than pooling in the concave bottom.

Detergent and Rinse Aid

Use tablets, not powder or gel. Dishwasher tablets consistently outperform loose powder and gel in independent testing because they contain pre-measured amounts of detergent, rinse aid, and degreaser in optimized ratios.

Use rinse aid. Rinse aid (such as Jet-Dry) prevents water from beading on dishes and instead causes it to sheet off, eliminating spots and streaks. Fill the rinse aid dispenser and set it to the middle level. Refill monthly.

Run hot water before starting. Turn on the kitchen faucet and let it run until the water is hot, then start the dishwasher. This ensures the first fill cycle uses hot water rather than cold water sitting in the pipes, which improves cleaning performance.

Monthly Dishwasher Maintenance

Clean the filter. Most dishwashers have a removable filter on the bottom floor of the tub. Twist or pull it out and rinse under running water. Scrub with a toothbrush to remove trapped food particles. A clogged filter recirculates dirty water over your dishes.

Run a vinegar cycle. Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run an empty hot cycle. The vinegar dissolves mineral deposits, grease, and detergent buildup from the spray arms, interior walls, and drain.

Wipe the door edges and gasket. The door edges and rubber gasket do not get reached by the spray arms. Food debris and mildew collect here. Wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of dish soap weekly.

Bottom Line

Clean the filter and spray arms monthly, load dishes facing the center spray arm, use the correct detergent amount, and run a vinegar cycle every 4 to 6 weeks. These maintenance steps resolve 90% of dishwasher performance complaints without a repair visit.
