I have previously written a review about the Logitech MX510. I did not have much negative to say about the MX510... So is the MX518 a good replacement for the MX510 besides the new look? Read below for your answer...
Logitech MX518
When my Logitech MX510 broke I was confident that I would buy another MX510. However, while searching, I noticed that Logitech had developed a new mouse based on the MX510 design. That couldn't be bad I thought. I was wrong. By saying that, the MX518 is not a bad mouse; it just didn't do it for me compared to the previous version (MX510).
Sure, the MX518 might have a higher DPI, but as I have mentioned in my previous review that is not as important as people tend to think. A good mouse is almost all about the feeling. That is why I advise people to go to a store and hold a mouse in their hands before buying it. Therefore it is very hard to say that one mouse is better than the other as it is very much about opinions.
Without further introduction, I will move on to the advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:- Good DPI
- Comfortable
- Runs well on most surfaces (except glass)
- It is possible to switch DPI on the mouse itself
Disadvantages:- Feels heavy (!!!)
- Does not run well with standard Windows XP drivers; additional drivers are needed or it will stall
It was hard to find both advantages and disadvantages for this mouse, but the disadvantages are very essential in my opinion. The driver problem is something you can fix, but you cannot change the weight. Of course I cannot reject that my system caused some of the problems that occured when plugging in the mouse, but I usually do not have problems with mouse drivers.
As previously stated, the MX518 feels very heavy compared to the MX510. This was something I never got used to and it bothered me till the day it broke. This is of course just my opinion, but I like it when a mouse is not "heavy". I would prefer a mouse to be too light instead of too heavy any given day. It just felt wrong. It felt clumsy and awkward. As I wrote in my MX510 review, one of the things I loved about the mouse was the weight. When I first tried the MX518, it was very different, which I did not expect. I bought it expecting the same mouse as a MX510 with better DPI and a slightly refreshed design.
Overall rating
I played so well with my MX510 and I haven't played as well since with my MX518 or Logitech G5 Laser (review coming soon). I think I have bought two mice that were wrong for me and because of that I will never buy a mouse that I have never held in my hand. When my G5 breaks I will buy a
Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0, which is said to be the best gamer mouse ever made. Because it was so popular it is being sold once again with a new fresh design. This also proves that the feeling is more important than the DPI as long as it is reasonable. However, this mouse is noticeably bigger than the Logitech mice I have tried.
