[Real Life] Xbox 360 -
06-13-2008, 06:59 PM
My Xbox 360 keeps overheating and gets the two red lights within a half hour playing. I bought an inter cooler for it (the kind that doesn't fry it..) and it had fixed the problem however it has started up again and I don't know what I should do to fix it. I cant send it in to Microsoft as my warranty is far past expired. So unless I get the three red rings I'm out. What should I do?
Its a 2006 model, I have it on the box so its not on the floor, the power supply doesn't even get warm so that's not the problem. The inter cooler is on, and still it dies after less than a half hour of gaming. If I had some cash I would just buy the kit to open it up and just leave it open as that seems to work well, i would like to clean it out too. If someone wants to buy the level 96 from me for only 20$ that's fine as then I will have the needed cash to fix it.
Can anyone help me?

Just keep your xbox on all day until you get full 3 red rings

I would but when it gets two rings it dies instantly and shuts off with just the two lights flashing until you press the power button. So i would love to do that but it is just not going to happen...
Im currently trying to make it exert as much power as possible right now, I put a blanket around it so it keeps the heat in, i pluged a controler in to it so it would charge, and im leaving the cooler on.
I will tell you how this turns out.

all i know is that microsoft has already had 1 billion dollars worth of warranty for the xbox 360
so far i think the only new console thats good is wii... you dont hear much bad things about them besides when they first came out... the controllers cords break easy cause all the movement.
playstation 3--- overheats crap load
xbox 360--- 1 billion dollars in warranty repairs however if they dont break than they last long time but if they break than they screwed badly
i never heard of 2 rings only 3 which means broken or 4 which means cord is loose

whats sad is that you jsut bought a game for it off ebay lol!
you know what i think?
save some money......
sell it on ebay and tell them that it overheats sometimes(dont tell how many times) this way they cant sue you for not telling them that it is broken or false advertisment.
if they say dude it over heats every 30 min!
you tell them.... dude i said it overheats when you bought it
lol
than buy a new one.... i mean they are better now than before everyday they try to improve it

Did you break the warranty sticker, because you could have just used a hair dryer; the heat allows the sticker to peel off without tearing or flaking.
I actually buy Xbox 360's and repair them. Note that the repair kit probably won't fix overheating. It could be just excessive dust in there that is causing the problem. The heatsinks are on tight enough, if they weren't you'd get error code 0102 or 0020 among others, so there must be an obstruction of the fan or incorrect ventilation.
Let me know how you get on or if you want any help..
And if your leaving it open, make sure it's earthed and that no-one touches it while it's on, or else kaboom - they'll get a nice little shock. You'd also want to make sure that any animals or small children don't get at it and break off a capacitor or resistor!
Good luck

Lol thanks, I remembered the hair dryer thing shortly after i had ripped the sticker off... I'm pretty sure im gettin error 4411, cuz when I press the the sync and eject button i get two 4s and two ones...I partially opened it already and there was already a TON of dust and stuff, im thinking thats the problem, just too much dust. When I get the repair kit that has the rrod fix and some arctic silver (just in case thats the problem, aka thermal paste) I will post what all happend... Well if you guys have any ideas on how to cool it better just shoot.

The 4's are actually 0's just to let you know
If you are going to go ahead with the kit, then make sure that you only apply a small amount of arctic silver as it doesn't conduct and transfer as well as the heatsinks actually do. I've seen a few people make this mistake and smother there 360 in it, lol
Also, remove the old thermal paste, very carefully - I use a swiss army knife but it's pretty dodgey if the knife slips. The old thermal compound paste will be on there like glue. Don't turn the Xbox 360 on while the heatsinks are off as there won't be be enough pressure on the CPU/GPU and if it heats up, solder joints will bridge and it'll need to be reballed - basically you'll have a heavy paper weight.
Make sure that you get the heatsinks on very tight, the more pressure the better, but then again not enough to break it, just to keep it on very securely.
You could always water cool it, but that'll be a hell of a job!
Let me know how it goes, I'd say the dust was one of the main causes of the overheating..
