Default Question for all you computer buffs - 07-22-2007, 01:54 AM

ok, so i was messing around with my video card settings when i came across a setting where i could reset my screen refresh rate. it was currently on 60 hertz, i changed it to 90 hertz and it increased my fps from averaging 60 to about 80.

now here is my question, my graphics card has the option to set the refersh rate all the way up to 150 hertz but when i put that as the setting my monitor goes black and i get an out of range message and then after 10 seconds everything goes back to normal and it says my monitor can't handle this refersh rate. does this mean even if i get a new video card it wouldnt make a difference because my monitor can't handle it and if i wanted to increase my fps would a new monitor help?

thanks for reading i appreciate any feedback

p.s. my monitor is very old!

The monitor itself has built in refresh rates and the video card is able to support all those ranges, I believe.

So the video card will be able to use refresh rates which your monitor cant support.

Best idea I have.

To change your monitors refresh rates. Right click your desktop goto properties > settings > advanced > monitor > refresh rates.....

I typed this

Most monitors can only do up to 75hz really. Only the more expensive ones can do up to 90 and few few few can do any higher. My card can support up to 250 but it's like, what's the point? My LCDs can only do 75. But yea, in some real games (ones made by real companies) generally use the refresh rate (vertical sync) to limit the fps. For HB, it may have just been a fluke of the code. I never really noticed a difference from 60->75.

Geforce 7600 or so.

As for refresh rate, yes. It would be smoother. It's the amount of times your screen is redrawn per second. A refresh rate of around 500 I believe? is around what your eye sees. Get that and it'll be lifelike smoothness.

Yea, I do wonder considering your graphics card has like a 5% impact rating on your fps in HB. Graphics cards mean little to nothing in 2 dimensional rendering. Especially in ddraw. D3D 2d rendering can be made pro though. I get 60-90fps regularly in the normal hb client and 400-600 in my d3d one ^^ ftw.

V-Sync will always limit your frames to your screens refresh rate, some graphics cards have it in their options to force v-sync for all programs irregardless of the software setting. I think it was supposed to be used in Helbreath, rather than just a fluke, but I haven't looked at the DDraw code for Helbreath in years. Might be something to look at
