I.) Introduction
Hi everybody and welcome to my 4th guide I've written on Runescape Community. I've been a member of Runescape Community for almost a year. Pures sparked my interest since the Runescape Classic days. Now that everything is changed I continue to study on how they work. I own only 1 ranger pure and I watch, discuss, breathe, and study the way pures work. I try to look for the quickest, best, cheapest way to train a powerful pure. I watch many PK Videos on pures. My interest began when I saw my first pk video (Pro--Cook Video 2) and I became obbessed with rangers after I saw Chrome Range's Video 1. Basically I write guides for fun and to share my discoveries with the world, and help new people who want a good pure to enjoy.
i.) Somethings you want to start a pure
Basically you have to consider what is more enjoyable to you, what fits your interests, and your budget. Now that Pest Control mini-game is out, my estimation of pure costs round to about 3M at the cheapest. Below are two main types of pures:
Rangers
Melee Pures
Of course there are hybrids with magic commonly, but those are two general ideas and the main two styles that often win fights. I will start by explaining rangers and then after that section will explain Melee Pures.
Magic Table to 45 Magic
Before you do anything, you should train your pure's magic to 45 right away so that you can teleport to the major places in runescape
24 x Wind Strike (Anywhere)
92 x Confuse (On Monk of Zamorak, In Varrock Palace under the stairs)
128 x Weaken (See Confuse)
134 x Curse (See Confuse)
200 x Varrock Teleport
309 x Lumbridge Teleport
725 x Falador Teleport
For Stage 1 you need:
Air Staff
24 x Mind Runes
For Stages 2-4, you need:
Earth Staff
928 x Water Runes
354 x Body Runes
For Stages 5-7 you need:
Air Staff
200 x Fire Runes
1234 x Law Runes
309 x Earth Runes
725 x Water Runes
II.) Rangers
This section is on the Range Pure. One of the cheapest, easiest to handle, and fun pures to pk with. This however can be the most boring to train on (people like me). I suggest putting 2M+ to have an effective ranger. Since the new prayers came out you have the decision. Would you rather have higher hp or more K0 power? That is the question for rangers whether or not to stay at 1/11 prayer or get 44/52 prayer.
A basic Ranger could look something like this:
Range: 75+
Hits: 65+
Magic: 45
Prayer: 1, 11, 13, 44, or 52.
I suggest pking at combat 55+ with a ranger. Rangers below that take no skill and abesolutly get nothing good. If you want to have real stuff and pk in reality, you should keep trainning until range 75 or more. First you need to get some quests completed.
QUESTS:
Waterfall Quest: Probably one of the easy quests and quick 30 atk and str to start with. Even though your not a melee, you may change your mind some point.
Dwarf Cannon: This is a MUST. You need this or it is impossible now to beat Desert Treasure if you want to be an Ancients Ranger. You need a cannon to defeat every boss now because Jagex has changed it so a friend cannot block a boss for you.
Death Plateau: This is another attack booster without doing much trainning like waterfall.
Priest in Peril: This is if you want to start an ancients ranger or just get prayer. This can also be beneficial, as you have access to Experiments (Level 25, 100 HP).
Desert Treasure: Complete all the required quests and this can give you access to Ancient Magicks. Pking with this list of magic is quite effective, as you can bind players in place and also do damage at the same time. This can also be a great final blow when pking another pure or player. If you are ancienting, I highly suggest getting 70+ magic. Ice Burst and Ice Barrage are the most common spells used.
Biohazard: This quest is optional, if you want to power train on ogres to avoid pest control that's fine. This technique involves less activity, in case if you want surf the forums or read a book while trainning.
Recipe for Diaster: This is not a required quest to be a good ranger. Most just get this out of the way incase they want to train melee and still be ranged based, or just get melee.
Rolving Elves: This quest is optional incase if you want the crystal bow. In that case, you must train your agility at least to 52 (use agility pots if not 56). Crystal bows are quite fun and useful in Pest Control.
Some stuff you need for trainning:
50k+ Arrows/Knifes (200k+ if your power trainning)
Amulet of Glory (Or a Fury amulet if you want)
D Hide of each set w/o body (Green, Blue, Red, Black)
Coif (or Robin Hood Hat)
Ranger Boots (optional)
Obsidian Cape (optional)
Now that you got some quests out of the way now is the road to a long, boring trainning session.
Places to Train:
1-15 Range
If you do not have a cannon, the best place to train is cows beside the Al Kharid toll gate.
15-40 Range
Next place to train is where I like to train, the dwarf mine near Falador. Bring food and arrows. Attack scorpions (level 14) until maybe 30 range. Then you can beat King Scorpions (level 32) in there as well. There are many rocks to hide behind from and they only a small max hit.
40-60 Range
Next place is to train on Rock Crabs which can be the most boring thing in the world. Make sure you bring a full inventory of lobsters, teleport runes, and a good amount of arrows.
60-70 Range
Next place is trainning on Ogres. You can find them at Lathas's trainning or try shooting them the blood rune tower north of Ardounge.
70+ Range
Then you can either continue to power train on ogres, train on experiments, or use the ever popular method, Pest Control. If your doing Pest control I consider you should do the following:
1.) Take either bronze or iron arrows, it takes about 1k iron arrows to grow a level when your picking up the arrows.
2.) Try to use good worlds and not World 78. Your job is to kill monsters that attack the Void Knight such as Defilers, Shifters, and Torchers.
3.) Try to get a fresh of world as possible. Ask your friend that are 90+ cmbt to tell some worlds for you.
4.) Every 300 points you spend on range, spend atleast 100 points on Hitpoints so it isn't too low and you can pk effectively.
When your done your pure should look like this:
Attack: 30+
Strength: 30+
Defense: 1
Hitpoints: (10-9 levels under your range)
Range: 75+
Prayer: 1,11,13,44, or 52
Magic: 45+
PKING METHOD
Now that your done, lets look what you need to bring to PK with you.
Regular Range
Equipment: (Picture Coming Soon)
Coif
Leather Body
Black Dragonhide Chaps
Black Dragonhide Vambs
Magic Shortbow
50 x Rune Arrows or 100 x Rune Arrows if you don't want to pick up.
Amulet of Power or Amulet of Glory
Ring of Recoil
Inventory: (Picture Coming Soon)
1 x Range Potion
1 x Anti-Poison Potion
2 x Ring of Recoil
24 x Shark
or
1 - 2x prayer potions if you have 44+ prayer.
How to Fight.
Basically all you need to do is watch your hp, and watch the opponent's hp. You want to special at the lower-half of a mid-hp bar. You don't want to use your special two low, because they will eat and it can mess you up. Also if you are looking for a challenge, try practicing specialing at the same time as the opponent dagger specials or Magic Shortbow special. When you are being daggered, you range once, half of your hp is gone, but you are faster than the dagger, special and that should k0 them because melee has lower hp then range. Eat quickly after a special to save yourself from recoils or the dagger.
Ancient Ranger
If you have completed Desert Treasure and are familar on how to pk with a basic ranger, then this is what you should pk with.
Equipment: (Picture Coming Soon)
Ghostly Hood/Gnome Hat/Canifis Hat
Amulet of Power/Glory
Ghostly Robe Top
Ghostly Robe Bottom/Black Dragonhide Chaps (if your more range)
Ghostly Boots
Magic Shortbow
Ghostly Gloves
Ghostly Cape/God Cape
50 x Rune Arrows or 100 if you don't want to pick up.
Ring of Recoil
Inventory: (Picture Coming Soon)
1 x Range Potion
1 x Anti-Poison Potion
1 x Ring of Recoil
22 x Shark
Burst: 50 x Death Runes, 100 x Water Runes, 100 x Chaos Runes
Barrage: 50 x Blood Runes, 100 x Death Runes, 150 x Water Runes
(Both spells are good for 25 spells)
How to Fight:
First, spot a pker. You first want to burst/barrage them and start ranging. Being honourable (such as myself), I go in the square next to the pker so they have a chance. You range much like you do if you were a normal ranger. At half hp, you range special, but then you Burst/Barrage to make sure it is a finisher after the special. If not, eat, get set for another round. Now that special is gone, you still have a finisher. After 3/4 hp bar is red, burst/barrage, to hope for a k0. What I like to do, if your rich, is buy rune knives to replace the magic short. I throw fast then burst at the 3/5 red hp bar. It slowly saps the hp then a finish blower to completely surprise them. It would look something like 2,13,5,0,4,15,22 (burst). Good thing about this tactic is that it is faster the magic shortbow and relys a lot on timing your ancients.
Conclusion: Rangers are easy to handle and are pretty fun when you get the hang of it. This is good if you want to kill some money and have a good time thrashing lower levels. I personally like this as well, as I also own a ranger. This is the cheapest and most enjoyable way to pk (in my opinion).

III.) Melee Pures
Now we move on to the discussion of melee pures. This is the most common type of pure and costs a bit more money to pk with but this is the easiest pure to train with. There are several types of melee pures in this section. There is obby maul pure, granite-maul pure, scimitar pure, whip pure, initiate pure, and rune pure. The three most common are the granite-maul, scimitar, and whip pure. I estimate they make up 65% of the pure population.
Obby Maul Pure
First we start off with the obby-maul pure. Off course, we all know it takes 60 strength to wield an obsidian maul. These are the lowest-combat level pures by far and can be the funnest as well. They look similar to this:
Attack: 1
Strength: 70
Defense: 1
Range: 40+
Prayer: 1, 13, or 31
Magic: 40+
Notice that you see the fact that most have an attack of one. They often use range as a primary tactic while pking and finish a big blow with the obsidian maul. The good part about these pures that obby mauls are cheap now so you won't buy a new scimitar&dagger when you lose. Also note that the low hp of most low combat rangers are very vunerable to high k0 18-22's by the maul.
Minimum Trainning Equipment:
Amulet of Glory (or Fury)
Mithril Gloves (need to complete Recipe for Disaster)
Iron Scimitar
Obsidian Maul
2k+ Iron Knives
Unholy Book
Quests to Complete:
Cook's Assisant
Recipe for Disaster
Horror of Deep
Trainning Place:
The place you want to train your obby maul pure is either rock crabs or pest control. Those are the only places to train. This is very time consuming as you have one attack with a very low stat weapon, so make the best of it and pay attention. You also need to train range too, and bring some food to last you. Also bring tele runes if your going to rock crabs. I suggest not bringing rares such as wearing a santa, because you could possibly lose it and no one really cares if you have a rare or not.
Pking
Pking can be quite difficult but once you master it you have no problem. Down below is needed equipment and explanation:
Equipment
(Picture Coming Soon)
Iron Helmet
Amulet of Strength/Power
Iron Plate (or Monk Robe if you have prayer)
Green D Hide Legs (or Monk Robe if you like more prayer)
50 x Black/Steel/Iron Knives
Unholy Book
Ring of Recoil
Inventory
(Picture Coming Soon)
1 x Obsidian Maul
1 x Super Strength Potion
1 x Range Potion
1-2 Prayer Potion (if you have prayer)
22+ Shark (leave atleast one space when you switch to maul)
Stragety
Ok the idea is that you need some good clicking skills. You need to pull out your obby maul in less than 4 seconds and click the opponent for a k0. Start using your knifing your opponent. When he gets down to half hp, maul them for the k0. This is very different because at 39+ combat, your opponent has less hp than a 50 combat does, so you can take the whole half hp when you get a good maul hit. Obby Maul pures can hit 20+ (depending on your strength). The good thing about them is you have the highest hitpoints of all the pures your level. No ranger, or another melee, can compare to yours. They have about 40+ hp and you have 60+ hp which makes a very huge difference in the fight.
Conclusion
These are very fun pures to fool around with. If your looking for a challenge and bragging rights, this is your pure.

Granite Maul Pure
We come now to the granite maul pure. Fear Figment brought the maul back into pking and it can turn out very successful for pures. Granite-Maul pures require skill, timing, and clicking like all other pures do. This is a very common pure and a lot of pures are quite successful with them. It takes 50 attack and 50 strength to wield the granite maul. These pures are usually located around the late 50's and mid 60's. They rely on strength, and have a higher hp than other melee pures at their level (except the obby maul pure). Here is a typical granite maul pure:
Attack: 50 or 52 (52 attack is glitched)
Strength: 80+
Hits: 70+
Prayer: 31 or 43
Defense: 1
What you need to start one:
Granite Maul
Rune Scimitar (s)
Amulet of Glory (or Fury Amulet)
Monk Robe Top
Monk Robe Bottom
Amulet of Strength (s)
About 2.5M+ for buying supplies, merchant with, any other things I missed.
Now since the granite maul pure can do quests to raise stats, here what you need to do.
1.) Waterfall Quest: for 30 attack and 30 strength
2.) Death Plateau: for 32 attack and climbing boots
3.) Tree Gnome Villiage: for 37 attack
4.) Grand Tree: for 42 attack
5.) Fight Arena: for 44 attack
6.) Horror of the Deep: for Unholy Book
7.) Priest in Peril: Prayer Experience & Access to Experiments
8.) Recipe for Disaster: Mithril Gloves
After you done all the quests, its now time for trainning
With 44 attack and 30 strength, your not quite there yet, you should train your attack first 50 attack (or 52) and 50 strength at rock crabs. After you get them, you should be able to start pest control. Train your strength all the way to 80, make sure for every 300 points you spend on strength, spend 100 on hitpoints. If your strength is 75, and you are bored of pest control, you can go to experiements, but you need to start part of Creature of Frenkinstrain.
Now to get 31 prayer, you need to bury 187 dragon bones to reach it. This costs about 500k, so have cash around when you do this. Prayer is very important at this stage.
Pking
Here is what the equipment should look like:
Equipment:
Rune Scimitar
Unholy Book
Amulet of Strength
Monk Robe Top
Monk Robe Bottom
Climbing Boots
Mithril Gloves
Ring of Recoil
Inventory:
1 x Granite Maul
1 x Ring of Recoil
1 x Super Strength Potion
1 x Super Attack Potion
2 x Prayer Potion
22 x Shark
Pking Method: What you need to do is pot up, turn on your prayers (protect item, improved reflexes, ultimate strength). When the opponent gets to about 1/2 red health, you have to have good clicking skills. Pull out your granite maul, and click the combat style button, then click the opponent make sure u attack him. Hit once, then special twice really quick. Make sure the two clicks are as fast as possible. This is even tough for me to do. Make sure you pull out your rune scimitar and unholy book incase if your opponent is not dead. If he is not dead, when he gets to about 3/4 red health, take out granite maul, and click your opponent for a k0, then repeat the process if your opponent is not dead.
Conclusion: Anyone can use a granite maul pure, you don't need to have 50 atk and 80 str to be a good granite maul pure. You could have 60 attack and 80 strength, and still be a good one. Granite Mauls always use timing. If you do not have this skill, don't bother making one. This takes skill and practice. Once your used to the wilderness, determined to be good granite maul pker, or you have an obby maul pure and your bored, you could make it into this one. Nothing wrong with this pure, this pure is really fun!
