Default General Discussion Rules & Guide-Lines - 12-28-2007, 03:59 PM

Welcome to General Discussion

In this forum, we invite you to have engaging discussion without the interference from spam in a light-hearted fashion. There are some ground rules I would like to cover with you before you begin.

So as to help make it clearer what constitutes as General Discussion material and what doesn't, this thread contains detailed clarification of the General Discussion guidelines in hopes of making the forum more orderly and more enjoyable.

General Discussion Core Rules

Flaming

Flaming is against the Terms of Service, and can get you warned or banned. This also includes posting pictures consisting of flamatory statements- bottom line, anything used to insult does not belong on Runescape-Markets, even if it is "friendly banter" and in jest.

Please deal with flaming by ignoring it and reporting it. Quoting and responding to a person who is flaming can add insult to injury, especially if you flame back. In the end, it does not matter who starts it- just report it and ignore it.

What is "spam" in this forum

Posts should contribute to the discussion at hand, or they are spam. If you intend on replying with a picture, there has to be content there that contributes to the discussion. If the picture is meant to be the entire content of the post, it does not belong here. Please post the random pictures elsewhere.

As well, making comments such as "tl;dr", "WALL OF TEXT" and a comment consisting only on how you did not read the a post, this is also spam. The idea is, if it is too long to read, you should not post about this epiphany. This will cause strikes against your account.

(Necroing old topics) Posting in an old thread, bumping it to the top of the forum is okay, as long as the post that bumps it is relevant to the discussion. If not, this is subject to moderator action, and may lead to a warning or ban.

(Bumping) If your thread's falling to the bottom of the page and you want to knock it up to the top again, don't just bump. Make a post that adds to the content of the thread or elaborates on the discussion at hand. Gotta keep it interesting to post!

(Advertising) If you want to publicize your website, Don't post a thread about it in GD. Advertising = spamming, and will get you warned or banned.

(Over-sized text) There is a series of sizes that are provided in the Post Reply window to sized your font. It is recommended to just stick to using those. Please recognize that manually editing the text to where it stretches the page in an unhealthy manner will be considered an act of trolling and spam.

Misplaced Threads

Misplaced threads should be reported to a moderator with the Report a Thread button.

Sarcastic and unhelpful comments in misplaced threads are spam, such as "tl;dr" and "WALL'o'TEXT".

Abusive comments are spam and flaming. This includes "STFU," "GTFO," "You fail," etc.

Posting a kind and helpful redirect to the correct forum, or replying to the topic in an appropriate fashion (e.g. rating an avatar thread, answering a question) will not result in a warning, but is discouraged because it bumps misplaced threads to the top of the forum.

Default Guide to Dealing With Trolls, Spammers & Mis-Placed Threads - 12-28-2007, 04:03 PM

Walkthrough guide to everything to keep the peace in General Discussion.

There is one key lesson here: Report and Ignore.

Please continue reading for rules and guidelines as to how to deal with other users who may be exhibiting trolling and spamming behavior.

Dealing with Misplaced Topics

Quoting, responding and getting flamey about people posting "the wrong things" in General Discussion is not recommended. This avoids a lot of future problems, such and warnings and bans because you "accidentally" insulted someone. Be aware insulting others will not be tolerated in this forum.

What you CAN do:

Report

Ignore

Politely respond pointing them to the correct forum.

What NOT to do:

Do NOT tell someone they are reported.

Do NOT flame back. It doesn't matter who starts it. Both parties will be found at fault, the instigator AND the responder.

Do NOT reply with "GTFO", "STFU", "Fail" ~or~ pictoflaming. This will get cause strikes against your account.

Pictoflaming is the act of using pictures, images and GIF files to insult another. These are usually derived of the word "fail". Quoting and responding in a manner that is meant to insult, name-call and flame will be treated as abuse and spam.

Dealing with Trolls

Trolling is not going to be tolerated in General Discussion. Spamming page-stretching posts, making PG13-limit breaking topics and abusing others is NOT permitted as per the Terms of Service.

What we expect you to do:

Report

Ignore

Directly PM an online moderator from any forum so the situation can be dealt with.

What NOT to do:

Encouraging trolls - Calling them out by name in your first post and title, egging them on and giving them your support by posting about them is not allowed. Trawling for trolls is forbidden. This encourages a behavior which is against the Terms of Service, and will result in penalties. It will not be tolerated, and will be treated as spam, if not trolling all on its own. Bare in mind, there are to be no name drops of users in General Discussion.

Quoting malicious page-stretching posts - Quoting and responding to posts of repetitive images and over-sized text is not permitted. Replying to these posts can stretch the page further, will be considered spam, if not trolling.

Telling them they are "Reported" - This can make a bad situation worse, such as them pinning and harassing you for making these comments and retaliating by turning their attention to you. It's highly suggested to keep these comments to yourself just to keep things semi-civil. Do the right thing and PM a moderator.

Understand that repeatedly posting in disregard to the Terms of Service will result in the ban of your account. As we all know, our accounts are precious to us, mains and mules- lets keep them out of trouble.
