Scanning
Overview
History
All right, in this section, I'm going to explain some basics and useful tips on how to download "stuff" and how to scan them.
The internet is a vast collection of information and resources. The most earliest uses of it was to share files. In the '80s, the time of MS-DOS and the time of BBS's, people had to dial a specific BBS Number to access a computer with files to download. Now, of course, there were billions of great files that people shared, but, beginning with a simple ANSI bomb, hackers started to infiltrate the BBS's and screw them up with viruses, worms, ANSI Bombs, RATs, etc.
They didn't have virus scanners back then (well, not the good ones that we used today) so many people could get easily infected if they were gullible enough to execute an infected file. Today, with all these virus scanners, people just simply have to point to the file, and scan it. If the scanner showed it as infected, they would move it into the recycle bin and wish it was gone.
In this guide, I will show you a few tips on how to make sure that you are not downloading an infected file AND how to securely delete them. Let's begin:
----------------------------------
Downloading a File
Where To
Where to find things to download? You can found links on forums, search engines, newsgroups, etc. But how do you specifically find the file you are looking for?
Google
If you do not use google, then get a life and start using it right now. Google is one of the most vastly used search engines and can pratically find anything you want whether it is warez, mp3s, **rn, you name it. Simply type in a few keywords (descriptions) about the things you are looking for in the search bar. (
http://www.google.com). If you are trying to search for Linkin Park MP3s, try using some keywords like this:
Code:
Linkin Park MP3
Linkin Park FREE MP3 Downloads
Linkin Park Torrent
There are plenty more but those are the ones you should search for as your first three tries. Keep in mind if google shows "Site might harm your computer":
DON'T GO ON IT IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWS.
Astalavista

If you are looking for warez downloads, use a warez search engine such as Astalavista.com (they even list out the harmful sites from the non-malicious sites!)
Ask
Not the ask.com, but the real "ask". Go on a popular forum that supports warez and/or piracy (you don't want to mention it on the RIAA forum right?) and ask them for good places to go for warez. It could really do something.
How to
Its easy, really. All you have to do is find the link, right click and click "Save As".
Scanning a file
Which Scanners
There are a bunch of scanners out there in the world. Some of the most popular are Nortan, Mcafee, and NOD32. However: there is one downside to all of this: they are all commercial. Sometimes, you don't feel the need in spending $40 a year for the scanner and updates. There are a bunch of free virus scanners that are pretty good too.
Some of the popular ones are listed here:
AVG AntiVirus
Avast AntiVirus
You can also use an online scanner (this requires ActiveX: use Internet Explorer for these)
TrendMicro HouseCall
BitDefender Online
There are much more: just search it in google.
If you really then feel like you need a commercial virus scanner, buy it. DON'T PIRATE THEM! Why? Often, pirated copies of virus scanners have their source code messed up. They might not protect viruses from the hacker group that cracked it! Just spend a few bucks and buy 'em in your nearest Circuit City, Best Buy, or whatever store you usually go to for electronics.
Then, whenever you download a file, first scan them with your own scanners.
Then, after you are done, upload the file to an online scanner like
http://virusscan.jotti.org. That virus scanner will use a bunch of different virus scanners to scan the file that you upload. The only catch: Has to be less than 10 MB.
Have it scan the file. AS you can see, the file that was marked "safe" by Avast wasn't marked safe by three other virus scanners.
Deleting a File
How To
Securely Delete
Most computer noobies just say, "Deleting a File is easy! All you have to do is drag it into the recycle bin and empty it! Voila!". Well, guess what, you little nooblets, that doesn't PHYSICALLY delete the file from your hard drive. It just erases the file from the directory! The file will stay in your hard drive until another file needs that space. Only then will it overide it! Now, with the huge 500GB hard drives, that could take years and decades! I am going to show you how to securely delete a file.
To do this, grab a FREE copy of Absolute File Shredder from
http://www.sys-shield.com. After you download it, open it up and do the following.
1.
Change the Shredding Method to 7 passes!
- Even though it might be slower, if you rewrite the file with random data SEVEN TIMES, it will be nearly impossible to recover.
2.
Add the file/files/folder that you want to delete
- File > Add Files
3. Press Start Shredding!
There! Now your file is securely deleted, along with the virus, and cannot be recovered! You can also use this method to delete illegal downloaded material so when the FBI agents sue you, THEY WILL HAVE NO PROOF! But, some files do leave traces/backup in the registry which you will have to manually delete. Have a security professional help with deleting stuff in the registry. One small error can screw up your entire O.S.!
Conclusion
Overview/Credits
Now, armed with this information, you should be able to smartly find, download, scan, and delete files. If you spend enough time, you can download all the warez you want without being infected by a single virus.
